Default 8707 v 8700

Astetically I think the 8700 is a much better choice of device. The 8707 just looks like a stretched 7100!

Actually my 8707v and 8700c look pretty much identical. In fact, they nearly are. The 8707 is maybe a 1-2mm thicker.

8707 is 3G and won't work in North America. 8700 is Quad Band GSM

The 8707 looks like an 8700 to me as well... The 7100 is definitely very different.

The 8707 is 3G, but is also Quad band and definately does work in North America, as I used mine there only just over a week ago.

You can see the 8707v product spec on their website.

Cheers,

Rich

It's pretty the same look as 8700 and it is QUAD and 3G and 2G technology.

Works flawlesly

Does anyone have experience with the 8707 in Japan? Does it have full functionality of the BB? I believe that Japan is the only additional country the the 8707 will work that the 8700 will not, am I correct?

The 8707 does not have EDGE, so in the US it will connect at GPRS speeds. Will it work - yes; will it be as fast in comparison to an EDGE based 8700 IN THE US - no.

Just like when you take an 8700 to the UK - where there is no EDGE service - it will work, but at much slower network speeds.

The 8707 doesnt have the intel processor so you may not even notice the faster data speeds of 3G. I would prefer an 8700g on EDGE cause of the intel CPU

It doesn't have EDGE, as it has something faster which is 3G / HDSPA.

I don't know where you took the information bigdongers but the 8707 is powered by a 312MHz Intel PXA901 processor.

Thank tupacy - I know it is 3G. Which does NOTHING in the US since we don't that frequency (2100MHz) here...

Hey,

i tried the 8707 for half a week. Didnt like it. Swapped back to my 8700.

The 8707 felt too "plasticy" for me. and the 3g wasnt any faster for me. (im in NZ)

Thats basically it? i noticed on the BES it has less memory as well compared to the 8700.

just my 2 cents

Yes, but 3G does mean something for the travelers among the forum members. I am in Europe and Asia, including Japan, very often. It appears that to get high speed, there will be a need for my current 8700C for the US and a 8707 for other countries. Can I switch my Cingular SIM and use the same phone number? I am still looking for someone that has used a BB in Japan.

Are you sure about that? The 312mhz processor is not mentioned on the spec sheet BlackBerry

Have you got a link to show that it is? I was told by RIM that it doesnt have the intel CPU.

I am a bit confused by this conversation. You folks are saying that we don't have 3G in North America. However, don't Verizon and Sprint have EV-DO networks, and aren't those 3G?

A related question - is the 8700g natively EV-DO compatible? I have T-Mobile service, and am currently on EDGE, but I have been looking into their future plans and it appears they are looking at deploying a high speed wireless like Verizon and Cingular (which they call 3G) by the end of 2006 or early 2007. So if they do that, will I be able to get it on my 8700g or will I need a new phone for that?

Workingmen - yes I've used a 8707v in Japan and you get full BB functionality (at least on BES - you can use the email / PIM and phone functions).

There's one way of looking at this as I had a conversation with a RIM exec about this yesterday. WOrds from the horses mouth : "an 8700 is optimised for GPRS/EDGE networks whereas and 8707v is optimised for 3G/UMTS networks, so it's all about where in the world you need to use your BlackBerry."

Lightbulb 8707 v 8700 - voice and data simultaneously?

I thought the main difference from a customer perspective was that on the 8707, data operates even while on the phone - so email still arrives while on a call etc., whereas with the 8700 (and probably most other models) this is not the case?

Maybe I dreamt this...
