Is this capability only available via 4.0 and BES or can this be done via redirector settings without 4.0 and BES?

Wireless sync capability requires BES in house or third party for that matter. If your a pro-sumer eOutlook (www.eoutlook.com) and Mailstreet (www.mailstreet.com) seem to be popular choices for third party Exchange and BES.

So, what if we have exchange and a fairly secure coprorate email system but no BES?

The problem is with the redirector you do not get all the features of a BES, such as MDS, calendar and contacts sync, etc..

The redirector simply redirects e-mail requests.. that's it..

then, with a redirector, if your workstation goes down at night, or the PC crashes, you lose ability to recieve your e-mail.

Servers and BES are a better choice

* The OS is much more stable than a desktop OS
* It is assumed servers will have some form of backup power supply in case of power failure
* The servers are taken down with far less regularlity than desktops
* Server hardware has greater MTBF

There are many other reasons..


If you have 5 or more blackberry users, buying BES is a good idea if your company can afford it..

We do, but currently a large portion of our users are on 950's because our customer, Bellsouth, reimburses us for some of these units. We actually have about thirty using BB's. The pronlem is that most are in the field (at Bellsouth) and have BS exchange accounts, not our internal Exchange accounts. So, if we could find some really cheap versions of BES or something comparable, that's what we would need. Another question, any way to forward messages from a person coming into the BB designated inbox to another account automatically. Ie., pop account setting, etc.. I am using . Thanks!

Purchasing BES doesn't matter what devices your users have, BES will give improvements to all of them.

Why would bellsouth reimburse you? My carrier wants to switch users to the newer blackberries as they could also have the phone portion.. and they would prefer we had new devices anyway. I'm sure your carrier would be willing to give incentive to switch..

How many use your own internal exchange accounts?

Honestly, i don't know why you have it set up the way you do but only you know why..

with 30 users BES would be a great alternative, you will gain much more centralized adminitrative interface to your hardware and software deployments on the blackberry..

there is no really cheap version of BES, it's licensed on a server (for the first 5 users) then you purchase cal's for additional users up to 30 (or more if you have more)

how to forward from the BB inbox to another account? Probably no way to do this unless you stop using the blackberry inbox exclusively... BES would be helpful here as you could set a forwarding rule on your Exchange server to go to a different acccount, as well as the Exchange inbox, hence you'd have two copies of one e-mail and the blackberry still gets it..

Bellsouthis our customer. Bellsouth usses BB's to talk to one another. To keep us in touch with the customer, BS let's us purchase the units for our people and then reimburses us for the monthly charges. It's a business thing. Anyway, I like the idea, but we would have to have an admin and so on. I don't know, I guess we're just not there yet.
