Does anyone know if Cingular will set me up on a month-to-month plan if I bring my own Blackberry and SIM card into them? I don't want to be stuck in a contract for a year. I used to be able to do this with my phone, just curious if it's the same deal with their Blackberry plans.

The Blackberry Data Add On Plan is not contracted if added to a voice plan. However if you are signing up for New Service, ie you don't have a voice plan already, where you want just data only or not, then you will have to sign a min. 1 year contract, and that's with any carrier.

Cingular won't issue you a phone number without a contract.

But they will do it with a voice plan. Do they treat the two differently?

They won't do it with a voiceplan anymore either. You might be able to call and pull it off, but I've never heard of it happening, and it definetly won't happen in a store.

It's worth a shot I guess, I'll see what happens. Do you know if I can have them activate a SIM card I already own or do I need to purchase a new one?

If the sim card was never used before, then you can use it, but once a Ssim card has been activated it can never be used again.
