I can't get the 8100 to charge through the USB port(s) on my laptop. Nver had any trouble with 4 or 5 other prior Blackberrys. Is anyone else having this issue?
It's starting to sound like a driver issue and the "insufficient power" warning is just bs. The Blackberry doesn't know how to say "bad/missing driver" so it gronks out a bogus power warning. Once you have the desktop software installed the computer suddenly finds the sufficient power? Ummmm.....no.
With my ThinkPad (X31) and Windows XP with Desktop 4.2 I don't get the "insufficient power" message, but the BB doesn't show as charging either. It connects to the laptop as is proven by the hardware wizard coming alive and announcing a connected device (correctly identified). But with Desktop 4.2 running or not, there is no charging activity on the Blackberry. I'm guessing these batteries are coded to accept charging only from the official wall charger unit. Further proof that with the proper usb driver for Mac these stupid charging messages would go away. It's just a language barrier between RIM and Mac.
the 8100 uses USB 2.0 so you need the new drivers to charge it. Drivers are installed with Desktop Manager 4.2 (on the cd with the 8100 or downloaded from BlackBerry)
