Default typing a dash in phone # for new contact

Please Login to Remove!

OK.. i've only had the pearl for a few days but cant figure this out:

I entered a new contact in the address book, and when entering the phone number for the contact, how do I type a dash '-' inbetween numbers? I was able to do it by hitting the menu key while entering the phone #, then selecting 'show symbols' and then the 'QW' key.

but isnt there an easier way to type a dash symbol when entering a number for a contact??

Use ALT + SYM (the * key) then use the QW key for the dash

ah, the alt+sym keys brings up the symbols menu-- cool that works.. and is a little faster.

still cant believe its that hard just to type a dash (I know i dont need to type dashes in the numbers, but i'm just used to it, and the dashes help me read the digits better)

not a major issue though.. loving the overall functions, versatility, and form factor of the pearl

Yep, the QWERTY keyboard units have the dash on the keyboard and when entering phone numbers, you need not even hit the ALT button.

I like to enter phone numbers in the address book in (XXX) XXX-XXXX format. It's a little difficult typing it in this way on the Pearl but not impossible. Would of been nice if it automatically converted this way after typing just the numbers in.

Yup, so will the 8800 trash the 8100 for reasons like this and APP SHORTCUTS from the home screen?

home screen shortcuts i'll give you. since day one i've said it's pointless not to offer a "disable dialing" feature when an existing, dedicated phone button can launch the app. that's just RIM being afraid to force folks to unlearn.

as for the QWERTYs' UnreliableTap letting you put dashes into address book number fields, that's a pointless, useless "ability feature".

neither is perfect, neither is better, and none is "best".

I enter most of my phone numbers from my email client. If I do enter something on the handheld itself I just modify it to the format I want later from the emial client.

Yeah I was thinking of that also but its a two step process and you'd have to remember to update your email client. Either way is inconvenient.

I just use the period...takes too long to remember how to get that dash in there...kind of like trying to get the second letter on the key in the PIN field...takes me about 5 minutes to figure it out each time.

That format is sweet and when you enter a ten digit number in Outlook contacts, it automatically converts it into (xxx) xxx-xxxx format which if you sync with outlook, will go automatically in your blackberry. Also its so much easier to edit contact on your computer in outlook than on any deivce.

Bottom line is use Outlook for contact editing.
