Hi all, new user here so please forgive my newbieness...

We have 8707 BBs and one of our users has asked me the following question...

if he gets an sms message that also contains someone's phone number, is there any easy way to use that phone number to call the person?

I know on a normal nokia mobile there is an option to 'use number' but I can't find similar on the BB.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

On the newer BBs, a phone number acts like a link (atleast on web pages). Just press enter while the phone number is selected and it'll call the number or give you an option to do so.

If the sms contains a phone number, for example 3336668869, I point my cursor on the number and click on the trackwheel, it will show me call 3336668869 or sms, etc

Just now when I received an email to notify me that someone replied to this thread, I pressed enter on the fake phone number listed above and it automatically dialed. Also like mentioned above, clicking the thumbwheel will give you more options.

thanks so much for the speedy replies. Unfortunately it didn't work.

I don't know if its the style of the message or if its a different model BB than you are all using but if I open the message then use the click wheel to select the number it still doesn't work.

The sms is from a call screening place so usually takes the format of:

CALLSCREEN: please phone Joe Bloggs on "0404040404". So when I click anywhere in that line it trys to reply to the sms not phone the number.

I would bet if the phone number isn't formatted properly in the message, then the device won't recognize that it's a valid phone number.

It may help if you set up the Smart Dialing preferences. These can be found in the Call Log under options.

It allows you to set your country code and national number length. This will sometimes help it automatically mark UK local numbers as links so you can click on them and call them.

Mine is usually set to +1 for my country code, even though I live in London (US expat), and it will not normally recogize UK numbers such as 07917 123 123 as a phone number you can click on. When I swith the country code to +44 and the national number length to 11 it will.

The other option is to place the cursor in the SMS on the first number directly. In the number I used above, put it on the "0" and then click the trackwheel. This should give you the option to dial the number right from there. The Blackberry won't highlight it, but generally anytime the cursor is on a number you can click the trackwheel and it will let you dial that number.

But again, the cursor has to be on start of the number.

I just checked this again to make sure and it still works. Much easier to put the cursor on the number with the 8100

Lastly, any number with a country code in front of it (+44, for example) will also show up as a link.
