Just fyi for enterprise users:

I purchased my BB about 2 weeks ago and was able to finally receive my work email on my Pearl on Monday. However, in order to finally configure my work email, our in-house tech support had to disable the BB's ability to communicate with the microSD card for confidentiality reasons (since the expandable memory can be read as an external mass storage device).

I thought that there could be a way around this issue by inserting a preloaded microSD card. However, when I asked if there was a way to just disable just the communication between the device and the computer via USB, the BB support said that this was not possible. (Apparently there are parameters that control the security settings and there is no way to configure the device in this manner. They can only disable the capability completely)

I wonder how all the companies who currently only support RIM are going to figure this issue out since most of the new BBs are going to have this expandable memory capability.

Probably going to keep the device though, I like the fact that I don't have to carry around a bulky BB and a phone (don't mind the suretype too much since I usually only use my BB to read emails). It's too bad I can't replace 3 devices (phone, BB, iPod) with one.

There is another option that your BES admin could explore. They can force encryption on the media card. I havent tested this yet to determine if this makes the only readable on the handheld or not. Check with your BES admin to see if this may be an acceptable alternative.

OK, I found out that there are a number of options for dealing with the media card.

1. Do nothing and allow unrestricted access to the media card.
2. Disable the card completely.
3. Force encryption and lock to a particular handheld.
4. Force encryption and lock to a particular user.

When encryption is enabled, the media card will be unreadable from a PC or card reader.
