.jar and .jad files have to be installed OTA (throught the web) or they can be converted to .cod files through blackberry JDE program. your desktop manager will not install anyfiles other .alx the info above is wrong

I wrote a small script that will create the JAD out of a JAR for you, if you have access to linux/mac it'll work:

create a missing JAD from JAR (J2ME midlets) « rivviepop phantom

However, just because you can install a JAR (game) doesn't mean it'll work. J2ME as a standard/spec is implemented differently on all the phones, what works on one may not work on another. Nokia in particular has a java class (I think it's nokia.ui.canvas?) that "locks" a JAR to a Nokia if used. Motorolas often have weird problems with generic JARs as well.

On average I've found about 1/3rd of "generic" JAR files from getjar.com work on a BlackBerry, the rest have issues of some sort.

Nope. .jar and .jad files are downloaded OTA. If we can get them to work properly, all we should need is a web site to upload them to.

Yup, you have to usually set a .htaccess file up as well to send the proper MIMEtypes for .cod, .jad and .jar files. I have a free webhost that allows this -- it's klunky (compared to running your own), but here's something I did for a fellow having problems installing a JAR from another site:

Index of /bb/

(those are some free world time clock apps under the 'ota' folder). You can steal my .htaccess contents on this server, they're not protected (boooo! security hole):

http://rivviepop.php0h.com/bb/.htaccess

(remove the extra blank lines) If you want some free space, the host isn't that shabby -- they have a webUI for file editing, FTP access, and other slightly more advanced features for some free web - including PHP, of course.

PHP0H.com - Free web hosting

Quick question - I've successfully installed Jar/Jad files. Some of the games I've installed either don't work right, or isn't just fun.

How do I erase some of the games I installed?

Go to Options, Advanced, Applications. Highlight the game to delete and press the menu button, choose Delete. Some app uninstalls may request a reboot at this stage so be prepared to give your handset a reboot (takes ~2mins).

Talking

I had the same problems with my website (to download OTA stuff that I couldnt get OTA from original site) until I got the mime types set right. Now I can dump a .jar up there and download it and install it quick as can be.

I just want to say that I have installed .jad/.jar files without using OTA or DM. I just save the jad/jar file in a folder on my memstick and then i go to the media folder and Explore.. then i just click on it and it and installed the game

Are you sure about this? I had to test it. Unfortunately I get a message that says "Unable to display file" when I click on the .jad or .jar file.
