Default Web Browsing

I am new to BB, and just purchased a BB Pearl on EBay - Forgive if I dont know, but surely I can browse the web without subscribing to a BB Data Plan. I already subscribe to 02 in the UK, receive GPRS and could browse the web with all previous mobile phones I had, without any additional subscription????

And surely you would be wrong.
No BB Data Plan = No Data. Period. End of story.
This has been discussed in these forums no less than 245675497 times.

YOU NEED A BLACKBERRY DATA PLAN TO USE ANY TYPE OF DATA FEATURES OF A BLACKBERRY.

Question though-

Yes, I fully understand that this is the case. But why? I mean, if you can do it on standard phones why doesn't the BB allow you to?

Cheers

If you have to ask, then you don't fully understand, do you? ;)

The Blackberry device needs to authenticate to RIM's network/servers in order for data transfer to be possible. You need a BB Data plan to allow this authentication.

Non-Blackberry devices don't care about RIM's servers. They use the carriers data network.
