Greetings everyone -

I just received a BB 7250 as a gift from a friend of mine who received a new company phone. It is on the Verizon network. I am currently on the Verizon National Family Shareplan and use a basic LG VX7000.

What steps do I need to take to switch over to my Blackberry? Also, how much more per month will I have to pay? I'm hoping that I won't have to completely switch to a special plan otherwise, I'll continue on with my current phone.

I am not looking to use this for constant e-mail checking but instead for basic phone service with occasional text messaging and keeping myself organized. I eventually want to phase out the use of my Palm and use that strictly for GPS Navigation.

I'm hate to say it...but maybe the BB isn't for you. Or, maybe you'll grow into it when you find out what the BB makes possible. I know nothing about Verizon and so can't advise there, but in general you will need to purchase a blackberry data plan for the BB in addition to voice, if you want to send and receive data (email, web browsing, and other things that rely on data). Browse around the board. Look at the FAQ (see link at top of page).

Verizon charges $44.99 a month for unlimited data on your BB, and that does not include any text messages. If all you are wanting to do is send text messages, then you may be better off keeping what you have. However, I think once you start using the BB with a data plan, you will find that you have a sudden addiction developing.

So - if I only want to use the voice service, I can just make the switch with no additional fees? Text is not that important, especially at $44.99 per month

Without the data package you'll typically only have voice and SMS, but it seems to me that your current phone may be better for voice only. The $44.99 a month covers data services suck as web surfing, email, and PIN messages.
