I don't recall all the other OS having this feature, but I just went to options, network, and "data services". You can turn your data on and off as you wish. This is helpful when you just want to plain get away from all the e-mails when you're out with your family or friends while still being able to receiving calls. Thought I would share that with you all.

i also have this feature with .67 Telefonica OS. I can choose from
-On
-Off
-Off When Roaming

Right, that's a new option in 4.2. Not sure if it was in any other release of 4.2 but look for it when the 8700 version is released too.

Yup, I have those options also, so I guess previous versions did have this

It was actually introduced in the fairly early releases of OS 4.1.

I had an 8700c for almost a year and a half, and I had no idea..I wish I did!

I don't have that option on my 8700, only turn radio off, data off is different I believe, you can still take calls but won't get any data.

I did notice a while back that the feature was hit and miss on some 4.1 OS versions but yes it's been around since 4.1. There was a post here somewhere, just a few days ago, about taking the .sfi file from the GPRS folder of a version that had this feature and placing it in the GPRS folder of a version that didn't and you could gain the feature. I never tried it myself but the poster claimed it worked. You had to do it while loading the OS he said.

Anyway, I love it! It's my vacation mode!

That's pretty awesome. Anyone know if there is a hotkey or shortcuts to get there? I'd like to be able turn data off when I go to bed and turn it back on in the morning... or turn it off when I'm at my desk, etc.

Clicking through the menu's is ok... just wondering if there was anything quicker.

So if i turn off the data will i still get SMS text or no? I turned off my internet with my BB and i have this damn data connection refused on my screen all the time, its getting old. Thanks!

sms is not a data service or it isn't here in australia it works of the general GSM / CDMA network this feature disables the Blackberry Packet data network.

GPRS / EDGE
become gprs / edge
so no email but WAP would work.

What about using the profiles to choose quiet mode while out with your family or sleeping so your BB does not disturb you? This also allows you to keep the time stamps on items you receive on your BB vs turning off your wireless antenna or disabling data services.

Good point. But if I'm at my desk or checking email on the computer at home... having to go back and delete all the notifications out of the BB again is repetitive / annoying.

The BB is supposed to make life easier. Not more complicated.

I don't know how it works for BIS, but for BES, if you delete from Outlook, and leave the email in your Deleted Items folder for a little while (not sure of the time it takes), it will delete from the BlackBerry. At least, that's how it works on our system. You can also force the deletion from the BlackBerry by using the Reconcile Now menu item in Messages from the BlackBerry. The email must be in the Deleted Items folder at the time. If you permanently delete (shift-delete) or empty the Deleted Items folder before the BlackBerry "sees" the item there, it won't leave the Message list.

This feature was added to the pearl so it would not get the Data Connection Refused message when customers dont have the Data Package add on. This stops the device from contstantly trying to connect to the server. =)
