Battery Drains on a Plane - WHY!?!
Please Login to Remove!
Argh. I've been having this incredibly frustrating issue with my Blackberry Pearl, and have no idea why.
I get on a plane, and I turn off the wireless. When I get to my destination 5 hours later, the battery is dead. Ugh.
Last night, I get on a plane, this time I do a FULL POWER OFF. When I get to my destination 9 hours later... battery is dead!
This has never happened to me with any other phone, and it's totally unacceptable.
What is going on!?! Has this ever happened to anyone?

I never tried it on a plane, but I never heard anybody compain of this either. I'd say that it's searching for a connection constantly even though you turned off the wireless and the phone. If so the unit is defective obviously. There's no way that should happen. Take it back.

I fly all over the world - not as much as John Clark does - and I have NEVER had the battery die on a plane. Either there is a third party app trying to connect to a network 24X7 or you have a faulty battery.

no issues on a plane here. normal battery consumption, even when constantly listening to mp3's & watching movies.

Sleep?
Aside from turning off the phone's radios, are you also putting it to sleep (holding the Mute button) or using a case with the sleep magnet?
Without doing so, is it possible you are pressing on buttons inadvertently, causing it to turn the screen on / off / on / off, which would drain the battery rather quickly.
Good Luck.

I just returned from a long trip with my Pearl. Four long flights to Europe and Africa. No problems with the battery whatsoever.
You may have a bad battery where altitude or pressurization is affecting it and causing it to drain (or short).

Why? - I think your phone is defective!
This is not common. Can you imagine the posts here if this happened to everyone???

Interesting. My battery drained about 50% on a recent 8.5 hour flight. Prior to taking off, I turned off the wireless (in anticipation of using the media player during the flight), and performed a full power off. I wound up not using the media player during the flight, but I suspect the phone might have inadvertently powered on in my pocket. (Having the "end" key double as a "power on" switch is convenient, I suppose, but makes it all too easy to accidentally turn on). Still, with the wireless off, I'm surprised by how much power was drained -- I doubt I moved around so much that the screen stayed on for very long.

If the phone is off, there is no reason that the battery drain would have anything to do with the airplane. I turn my radio off before takeoff and fiddle with my bb all the way across the country and have very little battery drain.
If it happens only on an airplane then I would be supicious of the battery/altitude. A couple years ago I replaced the battery in my Palm m515. A month or so later on the airplane I noticed the case was splitting. When I got home I noticed the battery had swelled up inside like a balloon. It didn't have any affect on it's charge but I had to replace the battery obviously.
With that being said, there is no reason your battery should run down if the wireless radio is off.

I had about 70-80% left and after a 3-4 hour flight, I had 20-30% left.
I should mention that I played Brickbreaker the whole way through. Could that have something to do with the battery drain?

I too fly a lot, and have never seen this problem. When I'm a passenger, I usually listen to MP3's and still have most of the battery I started the flight with.
