Okay,

So I have successfully been able to use the guide found here to use my BB as my internet for my laptop when there isn't a wireless signal around.

I have t-mobile and have read about their service which basically is like their normal internet service for your BB, but HIGH-SPEED. Is the process the exact same as far as plugging in via USB, connecting the BB and browsing the web.... only difference being you can browse quicker?

Speed would depend on many variables in including type of device (GPRS or EDGE) the class (class 1 etc...) and area. Don't compare the words high speed on a wireless device to broadband, there is no comparison. You won't break any speed records not matter what setup you have.

also, you said laptop, by default, the laptop will seem "faster" than the BB on the same connection because the laptop has MUCH better specs (I'm guessing atleast an 800mhz processor, compared to the BB's <200 and atleast 128mb RAM compared to the BB 2mb (or 15mb, dep on how it's setup)

So keep in mind Speed will seem different on two devices using the same connection (and also, as you probably know, depending on recepttion and battery life on the BB (less battery might make it unable to maintain the signal as well)

If the BB is plugged in for "tethering" then it's plugged in and charging the battery making battery life not an issue.

What I am saying is that right now I have the basic BB t-mobile plan. There is an additional option with t-mobile that you can have faster speeds with their network downloading. That is what I am talking about.

Are you talking about GPRS vs. EDGE? Yes, EDGE is faster than GPRS. From your previous posts I'm assuming you still have the 7100? The 7100 is not an EDGE capable device. If you are using your 7100 as a modem with your computer then GPRS speed is all you're going to get. You won't get the "high speed" EDGE.

John Clark, That makes more sense, thank you. Is there a t-mobile phone with EDGE that I can plug into to use on a laptop as well? (so that basically the phone acts as a modem)

The 8700 and 8100/Pearl are EDGE devices.

Also, you don't ALWAYS get EDGE. The cell tower has to be EDGE capable as well. Where I live I don't get EDGE on TMo with my 8100.

I know....they have EDGE in South America!! If I had to rely on TMo here I wouldn't have a BB. We have one tower....the rest is roaming on Unicel 850Mhz...good coverage all over Eastern Oregon. Oh yeah, and they're EDGE!

Also, make sure you have a tethering plan or you will some added charges to your bill. I know Cingular does it and I assume other carriers do as well.

I have T-Mobile BB plan. Not sure what you mean by the tethering part.

John Clark - So basically, I already have my t-mobile unlimited blackblerry plan (it isnt BES).

So would all I need to do is purchase the 8100 T-mobile Pearl and I am EDGE capable automatically?

I would then plug the 8100 into my laptop, and connect the same way I do with my current GSPS phone and browse on my laptop, using the 8100 as a modem basically with EDGE?

Yes but don't kid yourself. It's kinda like John sitting on the runway. High speed anticipated but not there. IMO EDGE is fine for emails, but for surfing you will grey quickly. Only VZW's EVDO does a decent job tethering.

Sad but true....for us GSM users EVDO's got us beat. Hard to beat that analogy, too!

It's just too bad your VZW won't work in the REST OF THE WORLD!!!! HA HA!!
