I set my 8800 down kinda hard in the holster and it turned off and reset. Has anyone else had this happen or am I just one of the lucky ones? Try it, you don't even have to drop it off more than 3-4 inches.

Can't say I have but I'm not about to voluntarily drop it right now, I'm sure I'll do that by accident enough in the near future...

Someone reported this within another thread yesterday, I believe.

If the battery seating space is just slightly oversized (outside proper tolerences by just a few 1/1000's) the unit's battery contacts could lose contact with the battery, simulating a battery-pull. This has happened with HTC and Audiovox units in the past, that I know of.

Try this: With the unit powered up, take the battery door off and leave the battery in it. Slowly manipulate the battery from side to side, top-to-bottom as well, while keeping a very close eye on the screen for signs of battery disconnect.

Also, if you have a rubber mallet, try a little 'light' impact in the area of the battery housing with the battery cover left on to simulate the jolt it receives upon just tossing it on a desk or the like.

Well after about a week of having the 8800 seems to reboot at least twice a day. Not even drops or anything like that. This morning i put it in the holster and it rebooted. The 8800 is a great quality BB, but I just must have a defective one. I know things happen. I'm gonna wait for a few more days of playing around, get shields for it and then get a new one. Anybody else having this?

I currently have an open issue on this with both RIM and Cingular Network support. Definitely some interaction between the network and the device.

Definitely! Check my recent posting in the other thread. Look out for "soft" resets. You can easily miss them.

AAARRRGGGGHHHH. I just dropped mine about 15 ago from about 6'. Luckily it fell on a rubber mat. Battery cover came off but that is all. The battery did not fall out and the phone never missed a beat.

This happened to me in the cingular store from about a 4" drop. I did it in front of the salesman to see if anything would happen. I kind of know him from going through so many phones =).

Anyway, form a 3-4" drop on the counter it did go black, then reboot. The battery space sounds like a good probable cause. Not sure though.

. . . exactly. I posted it last week under "sensitive case". I brought the unit back to the store and showed the sales manager the problem. It actually got to where tapping the bottom of the phone with light pressure caused the unit to reset. I tried everything, including sticking a small piece of paper in the tiny gap between the case and the battery (on the opposite side of the contacts of course) just to tighten how it sat and still got the reset.

I also experimented with and without the SD card and/or the SIM card and always the same result. The Cingular corp store refunded my money instead of putting me on top of the list to call when a new shipment arrived. Now that I see you had the same experience, it chills my eagerness to get a new 8800.

I have done it a few times since, and have not been able to repeat the same issue. So I am hoping it was a one time occurance.
