Couple weeks ago I upgraded from 8700c to the 8800c and recently received the following email from Cingular/AT&T:

Is there really any advantage with using a 3G sim card? I thought the device itself is 2/2.5G so would there be any benefits of a 3G enabled sim card?

no there isnt. Rogers is doing the same thing. They are just prepairing for when our 3 G network fully rolls out. 3G simcards hold the same capacity for contacts.

I'm also on Cingular and another reason for this, is that they only carry 3G sim cards now. Just simplifies the process for them even for those users without a 3G phone, as this card works for all but the much older phones.

Was that a quote from an authorized Cingular dealer or directly from Cingular marketing? Which ever the person who wrote it needs to get their facts straight. nsimpson, is correct in that while any GSM device can use the new SIM cards labled for 3GSM it doesn't enable 3G on it's own. The user still needs to be using a 3G supported device (ie: Samsung i600 aka: "Blackjack" sold by Cingular) in a 3G network coverage area.
