You will need a third party application... BeamBerry, Repligo, DocHawk... each is good in its own way. Search the Aftermarket Software forum here (scroll down) for info on each.

but......
Thanks for your help, but why does all literature on the 8700c give the impression that out of the box the unit is able to open excel, word and pdf files? Is this not the case?
thanks:

Sorry, you should be able to view excel as is, I read your post as asking to open an excel file.
Go to Options, Advanced, Applications. Scroll through, do you have Blackberry Attachment Service in there? If so, you should be able to put your BB cursor over the attachment in the email, click to View document, etc., follow the prompts.

step by step
Have an e-mail with xls attachment.
clicked on attachment, clicked on open attachment, then gives another screen with table of contents, and full content listed.
clicked on full content, then clicked on retrieve, then get message stating, " the document conversion failed"
I can't find anything that has blackberry attachment service, under options.

Go to Options, Advanced, Applications. Not just Options.
If it is not there, open Desktop Manager on your PC, and Application Loader. See if you see it listed there withOUT a checkmark beside it in the open box. If so, mark it and load it onto your BB.

abbgrip. I have the same problem all the time. I'm going to try beamberry to see if it works. All I want to do is view MSO attachments sent to me via email. For some reason I have issues with my bb looking at attachments. It could be pilot error, but I doubt it. Who me... make a mistake???

I use BeamBerry, and it certainly does the trick for viewing.
