Default App Error 205 - Death of a BB

Please Login to Remove!

I think I killed my bb...

I tried to install the much-discussed 4.2 OS today and upon reboot, got a fatal error screen.

Nothing appears but the message below:

App Error 205
Reset

I am going to try to wipe the handheld and reinstall 4.1, but does anyone have any ideas about what I did wrong?

OK, update: my handheld is unresponsive. I'm not sure I am going to be able to wipe it as all I see on screen is the error message with a link to reset. clicking the link cycles the device and I see the hourglass, then the error message again.

Can anyone tell me how to gain control of the device in this state, or how to wipe it or reset it given the error state I described above?

thx in advance

Ok, the resurrection is occurring as I type this.

Although it appeared to me that I was in an endless loop of reboot, error message, reboot, ran the desktop manager. After launching the application loader a couple times, I got the timing of it to communicate with the device to occur at the right time, prior to the error message from the handheld, but while the handheld was rebooting.

The application loader established a connection to the handheld while the handheld was only displaying a grey screen and an hourglass..

Voila, I was able to work with the Application loader. It detected the 4.2 OS and asked if I wanted to downgrade. I am in that process now having made the appropriate changes on my pc (deleted the 4.2 OS installation files from the loader directory and installed the 4.1 OS from my provider).

Perhaps this painful experience will benefit someone else down the blackberry road...

cheers..

I went for it and paid a price. I am hoping my handheld will recover and I won't have to schlep into my local Cingular store to confess my sins.

I didn't get to see the new OS as my handheld just completely froze up upon rebooting after installing 4.2.

I might try again if my device comes back and I have the confidence that I can recover from a major bad situation..

We'll see...

As a final entry on this topic, I was able to reload 4.1 after the fatal error.

I hope if anyone finds that they see the same error message, they can use this thread to help figure out what to do, specifically, to attempt to connect to the handheld while it is booting up and before it locks up with the error code 205.

I am sitting on the sidelines for now until 4.2 is generally released. I suspect it won't be by Cingular, but we'll see...

peace out

Did you delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader?

If the OS is not from the carrier branded on your phone then you need to delete this file.

Make a backup of your Data using Desktop Manager-Backup/Restore.

Then use JL_Cmder (in my sig) to wipe the BB. Make sure you've installed the OS to the PC and deleted the vendor.xml (remember, anytime you reinstall the OS package to the PC, or install a new OS package, you need to delete the vendor.xml again. Then connect the BB and run Desktop Manager. Go to "connections" at the top and select USB. Then run Application Loader and it will reload the OS to the BB. See this thread for more info. When you're done restore the backup you made above.

To anyone that is reading this thread..

Per John's suggestion I did the following..

- Unistalled current BB software (Desktop Manager) on my computer.
- Reboot
- Installed JL_Cmder
- Executed JL_Cmder
- Installed latest OS 4.2 (Mutle Language BB Device Manager & Desktop Manager)
- Deleted vendor.xml file

1) Ran Desktop Manager > Appication Loader > Choose 4.2 and some some smaller utilities (passwork keeper/BB messenger etc.)

2) continue with install and waited..

3) waited some more.... BOOM! finished!

HAHA THanks JOHN!!! you rock!
