Yes, it's a legitimate GPS replacement. I've used a standalone GPS device, a BT puck with my PDA, the early version of VZNavigator, and now TeleNav, and TeleNav does it just as well as the standalone without requiring a separate device. It is, in fact, a very nice solution to the GPS/Navi "need". The only caveat is you should avoid needing to get re-routed in the "stix" as it needs to have cell coverage to reload the maps to re-route you (the GPS signal works fine wherever, though).
As for the subject at hand (i.e. iPhone v. BB 8800), the lack of any sort of push email (except through Yahoo!), much less two-way reconciliation, the lack of GPS (important for the reasons stated above), the lack of 3G (and, please don't start with the 3G is overhyped line, and I know the 8800 is only EDGE as well, but it's also 1/2 the price), the touch-screen based keyboard (which necessarily eliminates the tactile element of typing on which many of us rely -- even when we don't know it) all mean the 8800 was the right choice for me.
Not to mention, I'm not sure if my firm supports whatever platform would be required to push/reconcile work email to the iPhone, but they do fully support BES (as well as Windows Mobile)....
In other words, for folks who use their device *primarily* for business use, I think they'll find that the 8800 is probably a better solution -- at this point anyway.
