Default Storing maps on SD card?

Please Login to Remove!

Just throwing out a question: Is there any mapping application that has (or plans to have) support for storing maps on the microSD card in my 8800? My TomTom, which I use for navigation in my car, stores all the maps of the Eastern US on a fairly small card, so I know this should be possible with the right software. It would be enormously useful to be able to use my GPS in areas where there is satellite but not cell tower coverage, and to have the maps load more quickly than they can using the mobile network.

Yea its pathetic, it's the whole reason I bought an 8800, I guess I should've done my research before, oh well, I think I might be going back to my 8525.

I don't feel that strongly about it, actually. This is my first BB and I'm really enjoying it. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from getting one based on my post, and I am making good use of its GPS abilities, as-is.

I'm hoping that some application will come out eventually that will be able to use the SD card for maps, and in general, that BB's will evolve in the direction of allowing more to be stored on the media cards.

its all politices, the companies need to suck the money out first by giving monthly service or having the users use data to download maps on the fly. Once the carriers and the vendors think they have sucked enought money out of people pockets and they will be forced to release a version of the software that will read the maps from the SD Card (they will sell that one again to make money).

If a Garmin, TomTom can read a map off an SD Card, I am sure a BB can do the same but money makes the world go around....

Yeah, sure, whatever.

Telenav is $120.00 per year. Maps are always up to date. How much are the annual updates for TomTom??

canuck your on robbers how much data does telenav use roughly as you know there is no unlimited data and i need my data for more then gps, sure telenav may only be 120 a year but if it costs me 300 a year in data overage charges that 120 is kinda a shitty deal.

if 3G was available i don't think it would be that big of an issue.. edge is just too slow and when you have unlimited data it doesnt matter anyway

My last bill, where I used Telenav a couple of hours a day for 5 days traveling in foreign cities, plus email, some surfing, and some local GPS use came up to 3MB. While Telenav uses data, it's not a major hog. It really depends on how many routes are planned, and how often you go off route.
