Hi does anyone know when OS 4.2 will be coming out for the 8703e (cdma)?

I heard that it now has a voice dialing feature and i don't want to go out and subscribe just to get that feature

I had heard that it should be released soon, but I don't have a solid release date. I think I read it on this forum somewhere.

I don't think the 8700/8703e 4.2 OS includes the voice dial feature....

As John says, there is no voice dial on 8700s, you need Verizon's 8830 to get that. However, it would add functionality to listen to wav file voicemails. That is what I'm hoping for soon.

There's talk of brand new operating systems for devices they JUST came out with, and yet the carriers can't release this one OS for the 8703e... ridiculous. Perhaps they figure if they don't deliver it, they can sell more of the new devices to users that were too frustrated to wait any longer - nice.

Honestly, there is nothing gained, really, with 4.2.1 for the 8700. It adds media functions but there is little room for media on the 8700 anyway. IMO, 4.1 is a much more stable OS.

I don't agree. Some of the newer third party software coming out requires 4.2 or higher to take advantage of all the new functionality. If you don't have 4.2, it may still work but with limited functionality.

That's true, but the 4.2.1 OS is so buggy it's not even funny. Read through the threads on the OS upgrades...TMobile has pulled two releases off their site for download. One was for the 8100 and the other is for the 8700. The OS's are full of bugs. I am normally all for upgrading OS's, as you can see from most all my previous posts, but my advice for now is stick with 4.1 unless you really need some feature gained by 4.2. Right now my GPS programs have been useless 50% of the time when I go to use them because of a Bluetooth Stack issue in the 4.2.1 RIM OS. I figured it was an obvious enough bug that they would fix it in the next release but I've been through 7 releases of 4.2.1 now and not one addressed it.

If you need something in 4.2 then upgrade. If you don't, the 4.1 for the 8700's is stable and 4.2.0.71/.73 were stable in the 8100 arena.

Just my $.02.

Oh, I agree. I had not planned on upgrading to 4.2 either but I just wanted to point out that there were other reasons that people may want to upgrade that have nothing to do with the functionality that comes with the 4.2 OS itself.

I just went back to the 4.1 OS because of the stability. All the programs I need work perfectly with it. When I get a new BlackBerry is when I will have the 4.2 OS.

I agree. Why ugrade to an OS that that is full of bugs when the 4.1 is so stable. That is the main reason I chose the BB rather than the Palm. Stability.
The only thing I cant use that I would like is the new google maps V1.6. But thats it.

I am able to use Google Maps with my 8700g and OS 4.1.0.377. It works just fine. I am using the 1.6.1 version.

I tried a copy of 4.2 for the 8703e and it truly sucked. It screwed up my BES e-mails and was SLOW as could be. I ended up going back to 4.1 yesterday after using it for 2 days. I won't be using 4.2 until Verizon releases the Curve hopefully.

Thats interesting as I have an 8700g too. I couldn't get google maps to connect to my Bluetooth gps when running OS 4.1.0.377 which is the UK o2 download. I found a place to get OS 4.2.1.94 and low and behold googlemaps now works. Also bbtracker discussed elsewhere on this forum runs on OS 4.2.1.94 albeit with the bluetooth stack problem John mentions, but not on OS 4.1.0.377. (It has been hoped that it will work fine on either OS in the next version 0.50) I don't find the os unstable in any way (stack prob apart, but then I had a pocket pc until recently

I actually agree with you. The OS is not unstable. I just think RIM should have fixed these issues with the 4.2.1 OS by now. There have been 7 versions of the 4.2.1 for the Pearl already and none addressed the Bluetooth issues or multi-tap issues (on Pearl only.) It's not quite as many for the 8700 but it's getting close.

That's interesting. You tried a copy of 4.2 with the 8703e? That's what this thread is about. Where did you find V4.2 for CDMA? I am useing V4.1.384 and google maps V1.6 still does not work. I had to download V1.5
