I've seen previous posts about how to get Verizon to unlock the 8830 for use with GSM SIM cards, but there is one aspect I don't understand.

Do I need to have the new SIM card in hand before calling to have the phone unlocked? I was hoping to buy a prepaid SIM card upon arriving at my oversees destination. Is that not workable?

The 8830 is CDMA in the US and GSM for roaming overseas. Not sure if the sim card needs to be in in order to unlock it. Some devices require it, some dont.

You shouldn't need a SIM card to get it unlocked.

Enter MEP2 when you go to Options>Advanced Options>SIM Card. if it prompts you for an unlock code you do not need a sim to get it unlocked
