I am currently a verizon user but my contract is almost up. I just became aware that the gps is disabled on the 8830 which pissed me off like many others. Is the sprint version enabled, does it work with google maps for free? Also how is the internet on it(speed wise)

you can download the Yahoo! Go. on your blackberry 8830 as long as you can register in to get your own free one. it comes with maps: driving directions, traffic watch and find nearby plus flickr.com for photo, news and e-mail all in one application on your bb8830.

however yahoo! go map and bb map sometime have problem due to either busy or weak reception. telenav map is better for me to keep connection with gps more than yahoo! go map and bb map. but telenav is not free.

I've been using an 8830 on the Sprint network for about a month now. The GPS does work with google maps. Getting turn by turn directions that start "where I am now" is really useful. It doesn't talk like telenav but it's still great.

Using the phone as a modem I see about 300kbps max. That's much slower then the EVDO Rev A card that I have but still very useable on the blackberry.

I was in Australia earlier this month. The GPS did not work. I'm not sure why and Sprint wasn't very helpful. I don't think they have the support model wraped around International roaming yet.

I use TeleNav with my Sprint branded 8830 and it works fantastic. Turn by turn voice as well as BIG arrows and print on the screen. Even re-routes around traffic! I travel to different cities on the East Coast for business and usually will enter my appointments into "My TeleNav" online so that they are loaded on the BB when I jump in the rental car. The Business lookup works great for me as well when searching for a nice restaurant close to an appointment or the hotel. If you travel a few times a month the $10. monthly charge is well worth it.

Tried the others and went back to TeleNav for my Sprint 8830. $10 month is nothing compared to gas prices these days...

BB Maps that comes with the unit works well. I just downloaded Google maps and it seems slower then BB Maps. Either way, both can access the GPS.

Thumbs up I am

Very happy with my Sprint 8830. My gf has the VZW 8830 clad in ugly silver, and I hate that there are blocked features. I am sure there might be some for Sprint, but none as significant as the blocked GPS. That just seems pointless! I was worried about going over to Sprint, as I loved my Nextel service, but I have been with them for a little over a month now, and I am very very happy!

I really like Telenav too. I use it everywhere I go. I travel around alot so I use it anytime I need to find food or other business.

Another big benefit of the Sprint 8830 vs. the Verizon model is the keyboard backlight. The Verizon has a dark blue keyboard backlight. Very difficult to read in the dark. The Sprint has white backlight which makes the keys very easy to read at night.

Go to the TeleNav site and purchase direct with a CC. They will bill your card monthly at the same rate that Sprint would charge. $9.99 and you bypass the Sprint nonsense and addition to your monthly phone bill.

Uhm... you already have it. It is on the Sprint 8830 and available right out of the box. BB Maps or the free Google Maps work very well.

And if you're not on the new (nextel) billing system, it is absolute heck trying to get the $30/mo plan. I finally got it added, but now I'm in limbo trying to get the $15/mo PAM added as well.
