Keyboard question

I have SureType set when in portrait mode but when I go to unlock the device in portrait mode the multitap keyboard pops up instead. Is there a reason for it.

A buddy of mine bought a Storm 2 and unlocked it but couldn't get the browser to work either. He is pretty good when it comes to phones and he didn't have any luck. He ended up returning the phone....
